6 Fall Tips to a Healthy Lawn

Lawn Revival Calgary offers effective tips on preparing your lawn for winter

1. Keep mowing, but make sure it's the correct height. Keep mowing. Grass continues to grow up to the first hard frost. It will need regular cuts to keep it at an ideal 2½- to 3-inch height. If you let it get too long, it will be vulnerable to snow mold.

If your grass is long, the rule of thumb is to cut 1/3 of the current length at a time. Your goal should be to get to that ideal length, but gradually, as to avoid shocking and stressing your grass.

Cutting grass too short is not a good idea., It diminishes the root system i.e. root depth is proportional to cutting height (the longer you let your grass grow, the deeper your roots will go). Too short grass impedes the lawn's ability to withstand winter cold and dryness.

2. Remove the leaves. A lawn full of leaves blocks the sun and traps moisture. This moisture can be detrimental to your lawn by leaving dead spots. Rake or blow leaves away as often as you can. Don't forget the corners!

3. Continue watering. People tend to reduce watering in the fall as the weather gets cooler, figuring that nature will take care of things for them. Although there's more rain, more dew, and less evaporation at in fall, that may not be enough to keep the grass roots hydrated and healthy going into the winter. A good rule of thumb is to get at least an inch of water a week—to keep track, you can use a rain gauge—then keep the sprinklers or irrigation system running until the end of September or mid October. After that, you'll want to blow out your irrigation system to avoid frozen pipes.

4. Loosen the soil. The usual advice would be to aerate. However, Alberta has abundant clay soil. Mechanically aerating your lawn may not get you the results you are expecting, Using Lawn Revival will loosen your soil and works even better than aeration. It will prevent soil from becoming compacted and covered with thatch - a thick layer of roots, stems, and debris- that blocks water, oxygen, and nutrients from reaching the soil. Lawn Revival corrects both problems by fracking the clay soil, allowing air and water to penetrate.

5. Add fertilizer. Fertilizer gives your lawn the nutrients it needs to survive the cold winter months and the energy to bounce back in the spring. It's recommended to use a phosphate-free, slow release fertilizer (16-0-10).The numbers indicate the percentage by weight of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, respectively. Potassium aids in root growth, disease protection, drought tolerance, and cold resistance.

6. Over-seed your lawn. Over-seeding will create a dense lawn, which helps prevent weed growth. Over-seeding fills in thin spots or bare patches, allowing you to introduce the latest in resilient, drought-tolerant grasses. Fall is the best time to over-seed because the ground is still warm, there is more moisture, nights and days are cooler. Seeds need to be in full contact with the soil and kept moist until they germinate so that they can be established before it gets too cold.
